Same Face, Two Views: Bringing Inspection-Grade Imaging to a Community Wellbeing Festival at Shonan iPark
On Saturday, November 21, 2026, TOMOMI RESEARCH, INC. will take part in the Shin-Shonan Wellbeing Festa 2026, a free community wellbeing festival in Fujisawa, Kanagawa. Visitors will be able to photograph their own face using the same lighting technology we normally apply to industrial surface inspection, and see it in two very different ways. Admission is free.
Why an inspection technology is going to a community festival
Most of the time, our work happens far from the public eye. FORESIGHT STEREO® is a lighting and imaging technology used in manufacturing, where quality teams rely on it to bring out fine surface relief on products during visual inspection. The people who benefit from it rarely get to see how it works.
Community events like this one are a chance to change that. The festival opens the Shonan Health Innovation Park, a research campus most residents rarely get to enter, to families for a day of hands-on technology demonstrations, talks, food, and music. For us, it is an opportunity to show neighbors what kind of technology is being developed in their area, and to let them experience it directly rather than read about it.
Choosing the human face as the subject was deliberate. It is the most familiar surface anyone knows, which makes it an ideal way to show that changing only the direction of light can reveal information an ordinary photo or mirror does not.
What visitors will experience
Our exhibit appears on the festival's official exhibitor list under the following title and description (translated from Japanese):
"See the surface of your skin that your everyday mirror can't show you!"
We introduce FORESIGHT STEREO®, which uses light to visualize wrinkles and fine surface relief on the skin, along with AI-based skin evaluation technology.
The format is simple. Visitors step up to an imaging device that lights and photographs the face, take a picture of their own face or skin, and see the results on screen. The same face is shown in two views:
- Reflectance view. Differences in how much light the surface reflects are shown in grayscale, separated from the shading caused by surface relief. Look for variations in tone, such as spots.
- Surface relief view. Fine surface relief, such as wrinkles and skin texture patterns, is displayed so that it is easier to see.
Put side by side, the two images can look surprisingly different, even though they come from the same photo session.
How it works: photometric stereo, in plain terms
The underlying method is called photometric stereo. The camera stays fixed while the lighting direction changes, and several images are captured. Any given point on the surface looks brighter or darker depending on where the light comes from. By comparing those changes in brightness, the system estimates which way the surface faces at each point and how much light it reflects, then displays those two kinds of information separately.
If you have ever shone a flashlight across a wall at a low angle and suddenly noticed bumps you had never seen before, you already understand the intuition. Photometric stereo takes that everyday observation and makes it systematic with a camera and computation.
In a factory, the same principle helps separate genuine surface relief from differences in reflectance. At the festival, it simply lets people see their own face in a new way.

Summary
Changing only the direction of light can turn one face into two distinct images: one showing reflectance, the other showing surface relief. On November 21, we are bringing a technology built for industrial inspection to a local wellbeing festival so that anyone can try it with the most familiar surface of all.
This is a hands-on imaging experience, not a cosmetic or medical diagnosis.
